So after being burned several times by watching bad CG movies I made a vow to never watch any computer animated movies from anyone other than DreamWorks and Pixar. Unsurprisingly this has resulted in ‘Planet 51’ from Ilion Animation Studios and TriStar, passing me by. As it turns out Planet 51 is a Spanish made CG film which has now been turned into a video game by Pyro Studios and Sega.

So what is Planet 51 about? You take control of Lem; a geeky teenage Alien boy interested in Astronomy. To begin with you’re faced with a number of menial duties such as mowing your neighbours back lawn and taking your mother’s car to the garage. To make things worse the local bully is picking on Lem a bit and of course the girl he fancies from school isn’t really interested in such a no hoper. All of that is about to change when Chuck, a human, lands on Lem’s home planet (Planet 51) and causes and almighty ruckus. People think Chuck is dangerous and contagious and label him as some sort of Zombie. Luckily because Lem is the only smart person in town he realises he needs to protect Chuck from the military and allows Chuck to hide in his bedroom whilst they plan how to repair his ship, then get him back home (Earth). To do this you will take control of Lem, Chuck and a little WALL-E style robot called Rover in what I can only describe as; Grand Theft Auto IV for kids! GTA4 kids? Am I crazy? No.

Planet 51 for Xbox 360 is an open world adventure focussed primarily on driving missions. These can be as simple as racing Grease Lightning style against that bully I mentioned earlier but can get more complicated when you need to deliver packages, catch stray dogs and take photos of a comet. There are many more mission styles than that but they all revolve around you grabbing a car (or other vehicles like Bikes, Truck, Motorcycles) and getting to and from the mission as quickly as possible by following a map in the bottom corner of your screen. Now granted the GTA similarities end after you realise you can’t just kill someone with a gun to steal their car but apart from that (and the 1950’s Americana-esque setting) Planet 51 is pretty much a Grand Theft Auto 4 clone filled with Aliens and UFO shaped vehicles.

Is it any good? Well yes and no. The story of Planet 51 the video game, even if it is ‘just for kids’ is very generic. Driving around the town and surrounding areas in a whole host of wacky vehicles is fun, the problem is that most of the missions are quite dull with not enough variation and are either too easy or too hard. The extra difficulty usually arises when moments of poor game design show through in the more complex missions rather than a mission actually being insanely difficult on purpose.

Oddly enough the bonus side missions that just involve you driving around finding pieces of a comic book with your car are much more fun. This is because they are hidden and you’ll need to explore everywhere and use a variety of different vehicles to find them. The vehicles generally handle the same but some are faster than others, all have a special boost button that gives you extra speed for a few seconds. Like me you’ll probably find a favourite car that looks cool and is fast enough to use for most of the missions.

Whilst the graphics look lovely, the frame rate jumps from being smooth to stuttering at seemingly random times. The cut scenes look the business but suffer from some of the worst lip syncing, script writing and voice acting I’ve encountered in many years. I will gladly point out that all cut scenes can be skipped with the B button, phew!

Sadly whilst Planet 51 The Game shows moments of potential and brings the open world mission era of gameplay to kids I can’t help but feel that this is still a rush job intended to promote the movie. The ability to unlock clips from the film could be considered a bonus but are more likely there to get the kids to pester their parents to take them to the cinema or buy the DVD when it comes out. Don’t get me wrong Planet 51 is quite playable and does have moments that are fun but these are quite outweighed by the blandness of what appears to be just another game designed to appeal to kids for 60 days when they and their friends are chatting about the movie in the school playground and forgotten soon afterwards when the next blockbuster arrives.

Planet 51 The Game scores 6 out of 10 and it will likely keep the younger kids entertained for a while. Just don’t hold your breath thinking they will not want another game to play in the coming weeks.

If there’s one thing gamers like doing it’s shooting Nazis. Whether it’s in the first-person mode of Wolfenstein or shooting Nazi zombies in Call of Duty, it’s a lot of fun. Pandemic’s sandbox game lets you shoot them, run them over and blow them up as you attempt to liberate areas around Paris from the regime as a tough-talking whisky-swilling mechanic called Sean Devlin.

If you’ve played any Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row game you’ll know the deal. You drive to an icon on the map, get given a mission which is usually to escort someone, kill somebody or blow something up, then go to the next icon and do it all again, each time with a slightly tougher mission and unlocking new vehicles and weapons to help you out.

You also get extra money and contraband by blowing up Nazi installations such as speakers, fuel depots and road blocks, and as you complete certain challenges you can unlock perks which give Sean extra skills to help him fight the Third Reich.

The 1940s setting really gives the game a great atmosphere. There are lots of burlesque ladies to look at, some great architecture and classic cars to drive about in and a fantastic colour scheme. Areas under Nazi control are black and white apart from the red of the Swastika armbands and other important locations. Liberated parts, however, are full of colour. Character models are also great to look at and Sean’s one liners are very funny whether in a cut-scene or during a fight.

Sean can also climb up buildings to get into restricted areas but he’s no superhero so don’t expect his movement to be anything like the skills from InFamous or Assassin’s Creed. He can also don a Nazi uniform to get to places he shouldn’t be but don’t get too close to fellow soldiers or they’ll get suspicious and sound the alarm.

There are some points that don’t sit right to me in this game. In normal mode Sean seems to be able to take a hell of a lot of damage before he dies and this can lead to some rather gung-ho approaches to missions. You also seem to be able to blow things up right under the noses of Nazis without them batting an eyelid. Sean’s also a decent character so the ability he has to jack cars off innocent motorists also seems rather odd.

Still, despite frequent loading screens and the fact that, like Sean himself, the game’s a little rough around the edges, if you love your sandbox games and want something a little moodier than GTA or Saints Row with a good story and great characters, you’ve found it here. The Saboteur gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

In the Ballad of Gay Tony you don’t play as club owner Tony Prince, but his business partner Luis Lopez – yet another guy trying to do good but hanging out with deadbeats and getting into all sorts of bother which involves fast cars, loose women, guns and of course a high body count.

Whereas Lost and Damned gave us an emphasis on bikes, this time around the emphasis is on taking to the skies, whether it’s in one of the many helicopter missions or base jumping off building and out of planes. You can also try your hand at managing the glitzy clubs and even take to the dance floor in a mini game which plays a bit like PS One title Britney’s Dance Beat. Although the prize for doing this in some instances is going into a back room with one of the ladies and letting her take care of your…accounts.

Once again this story crosses over with the Grand Theft Auto 4 and Lost and Damned stories and mainly concentrates on those diamonds which keep getting everyone into trouble. You’ll meet some new characters along the way including Yusuf, a gold Uzi-touting Egyptian who likes to call everyone the ‘N word’.

The story’s predictable but fun and the dialogue and characters are once again what make the game work so well. Some of the conversations in the cars are laugh out loud funny.

Combat can feel a little bit awkward this time around (especially if you’ve just played Uncharted 2) and the helicopter combat really needs you to have 14 fingers. Still, flying about Liberty City is certainly fun and parachuting above it and trying to hit checkpoints Pilotwings style is also a welcome change to what’s achievable in this huge sandbox playground.

The game does have some difficulty spikes but to be honest, as long as you make sure you have full armour and health when you go into a mission and you keep hold of some of the more powerful guns you’re given on some missions, most missions are actually a little too easy. Thankfully there are generous checkpoints mid mission so if you do die or get busted, you don’t have to go right back to the start and drive over half the city again.

You’ll complete the story in just over 6 hours if you don’t take part in any of the base jumping or drug wars missions but whilst you’re playing it, you are going to have a lot of fun. Oh, and be warned, this is probably the most explicit of all the GTAs I’ve played with lots of sex and even the C word so it’s definitely not something you should play around your kids.

Gay Tony gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

I have to confess that I missed out on the original game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, owing to taking a short career break, so the character of Nathan Drake, a charismatic fortune hunter, was new to me, and I didn’t know quite what to expect from the title. What I found was a game which is so immersive, so polished, so addictive and so beautifully programmed that it is very possibly that most sought after of all things: the perfect videogame.

I don’t mean that it’s going to be the best videogame that you EVER play, for if that were the case, well… you’d never ever need to play another game, and there are so many different categories and genres of videogames these days, and such a diverse gaming audience, that there are bound to be those who would prefer to play, for example, a flight sim, or perhaps a racing game. But what Uncharted 2 does, is to promise its audience a specific gaming experience, and then deliver on everything that it promises, with literally ZERO flaws – hence: it’s perfect.

For those who, like me, didn’t play the first Uncharted, this game has a lot in common with Tomb Raider, in that you’re touring the world, exploring ancient civilisations to hunt for clues to ancient priceless artefacts – in this case the ultimate quest is for a mystical gem which promises its possessor no less than world domination. Now I’ve always been a massive (some might say obsessive) fan of Tomb Raider, ever since the first game in the series back on the original PlayStation. I tell you that so that when I say that Uncharted 2 is, for me, the game that Tomb Raider could only ever hope to be, you’ll hopefully realise that I’m not just spitting out empty hyperbole, I’m speaking as someone that quite literally worships the escapades of Miss Croft.

From the moment that Uncharted 2 begins, with you in the role of the rugged hero Nathan Drake, finding yourself hanging from a derailed train which is itself hanging off a cliff on a snowy mountainside, you’re drawn inextricably into an incredibly immersive adventure that I personally found almost impossible to stop playing. In fact if it hadn’t been for the fact of having to feed my recently arrived baby daughter, plus the occasional need to sleep and eat, then I very probably wouldn’t have stopped playing this game till I finished it.

Everything about the game screams obsessive attention to detail – the lavish environments rival anything I’ve ever seen in a videogame title, up to and including the awesome sprawling cityscapes of Grand Theft Auto IV, in fact the GTA IV backdrops looking like a child’s drawings compared to the beautifully created environments in this game. The script – unusually – appears to have actually been written by professional script writers who feel that the narrative (consisting of both seamless cut-sequences and ‘in game’ dialogue) should be entertaining for its own sake, rather than used simply to string the various game sequences together, and the ‘acting’ of the characters, both in terms of voice-acting and physical animation, is of a standard which would put most ‘live’ big-screen Hollywood movie actors to shame. The extremely cinematic feel of the whole thing is further enhanced by genuinely brilliant camerawork which serves the dual purpose of creating appropriate drama and atmosphere, whilst also giving you clues as to what you should be thinking about doing next.

On the subject of what you should be doing next – I remember that I used to complain a long time ago in reviews about games being too ‘linear’. These days though I think I’ve just spent too long wandering the massive digital worlds that videogames can now offer us because when it comes to ‘massive sandbox’-type games, I almost shudder at the thought of trekking for hours through mammoth environments trying to figure out what I need to be doing. Thinking back, I guess I just got too excited about the expanding videogame horizons back then, because now, for me, videogames aren’t necessarily about being ‘free to roam’, they’re about being able to experience a particular adventure, be it driving a race car, fighting off marauding aliens or – as in this case – exploring ancient tombs. So for me, the linearity of Uncharted 2 is set just about right, and I actually like the fact that the action, the puzzles and storyline combine to push me along a specific path. Don’t get me wrong – you still have freedom to roam to a point, and you still need to figure out how to get through the game yourself, but you don’t ever seem to find yourself wandering around aimlessly searching for that one particular hidden switch which gets you to the next stage, the way you do in some lesser action-adventures. This is despite that fact that here, unlike in most other games of this type, the way you climb things, or solve puzzles, doesn’t rely solely on clearly labelled ledges and paths – instead the almost photo-realistic environment is just ‘there’ all around you, and clever lighting and use of the camera gives you hints as to what path to take. And should you get really stuck, the game seems to realise this, and offers you hints, each of which is slightly more pointed than the last to ensure you eventually get where you’re going.

Of course, in a game like this the hero is important, and our hero Nathan Drake has the athleticism of Lara Croft (if not the ‘assets’!) and the wit of James Bond, along with a lot of Bond’s marksmanship skills too. As a result, the levels offer a heady mixture of exploration, puzzle solving and gun battling in more-or-less equal measure, each aspect of which, surprisingly, works extremely well. I was surprised at this, because although I was expecting the adventure side of things to work well, I’ve found in the past that gunplay in third-person games of this type doesn’t always work so well, usually because the control system has been designed around the platform-adventure aspect of the game which doesn’t always lend itself that well to gunfights. In Uncharted 2 however, it all flows together exactly right – one minute you’re clambering around in an ancient temple trying to find the hidden puzzles, the next you’re battling heavily-armed soldiers in all-out warfare, and it all plays… just perfectly.

For those who live their lives online, Uncharted 2 also offers an online multiplayer option, or rather: multiple options. Several different game types exist, including a variety of team deathmatch modes, and also some cooperative adventure modes that allow three players at a time to tackle various levels from the main game. Refreshingly though, the developers don’t have you just playing through exactly the same levels as in story mode, instead they’ve been tweaked and changed with different puzzles inserted and small differences made to the layout which mean that while they might initially look similar, in reality your multiplayer experiences will be completely different to your solo ones.

All the multiplayer modes that I’ve sampled worked extremely well – the team deathmatch modes (limited to five players on five) reminded me a lot of Gears Of War, only actually more fun as you don’t have to rely quite so much on taking cover as you do in that Xbox 360 game. For me though, the three-player online cooperative puzzle maps were far and away the most fun, and – thanks to the variety of ways that you can complete each level and the fact that playing with different teams of people means that everyone tackles them differently – for me these offer endless replay value.

So it’s fair to say that I liked this game, yes? Now sometimes, when you review a game and you want to give it a REALLY good score, you worry that other people who read your review are going to disagree with you, and might feel that the reviewer is being overgenerous. In this case though, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is, for me, THE best game I have played so far this year on any console. I’d even go so far as to say that I think it’s actually the best game I have EVER played on any gaming format… ever, and I’ve played a lot of games over the years! I’ve finished the story mode once, and I’m playing through it all over again already, and I fully expect to be playing through it many more times over the coming months. That’s when I’m not teaming up online for some cooperative adventuring, obviously. Quite simply: this game is perfect. Everything about it is done exactly right, and if developer Naughty Dog isn’t already working on a sequel to it then I will be moving heaven and earth to see that they do. Not because I’ll ever get tired of playing this one you understand, but at some point I’m worried that I might actually wear the game disc out. And as for the score – do you really need to ask? I’m giving it the almost unheard of, once in a blue moon, absolutely spot on ‘Perfect’ 10 out of 10. If you play this game and you fail to find it absolutely, earth-shatteringly, ground-breakingly awesome, then I would say you should sell your PS3 and give up on videogames forever, because in the opinion of this reviewer… there’s something wrong with you. If you don’t have a PS3 on the other hand – this is your reason to buy one.

Forget what you think you know about Red Faction, this game is very different from the first-person shooter set mostly underground where you couldn’t destroy as much as they claimed you could. This time everything building and structure can be destroyed and it’s an integral part of the gameplay. You’ll also notice they’ve switched to third-person so you can see and avoid all the destruction around you.

So, you come to Mars to work and soon find out the Earth Defence Foundation or EDF are running the place in a very heavy handed manner to put it mildly. It turns out your brother is working for the resistance called Red Faction and at the start of the game, he gets gunned down. Needless to say that’s enough motivation for you to join them too and begin taking the power back.

So you end up in an open world scenario where you do story missions to progress, but also other missions on the side which give raises morale of townsfolk, meaning more soldiers join the fight with you and you can get better upgrades for your weapons. Blowing up towers and barrels full of explosives is a good way to bring down buildings, but you also have the use of explosive charges, a very powerful hammer and eventually rocket launchers and other powerful weapons.

The game world looks fantastic and the music makes battles really exciting whether you’re rescuing hostages or blowing up strategic EDF bases. There are also vehicles you can hop in and out of GTA style if you need to make a quick getaway and huge walkers which are the most fun you’ll have – walking right through buildings to cause the most destruction I’ve ever seen in a game!

You soon learn this game is all about using the environment around you. Fighting the EDF directly will work but takes time. It’s better to blow up buildings or structures nearby and bury them alive (it’s also a lot more fun).

And once you’ve had fun with the single player mode there’s multiplayer mode to try out with some fun new game modes and of course all that lovely destruction to mix things up a bit.

If you like a challenge, lots of destruction and you want to play something a bit different, this could be your game of the summer.

InFamous may look like a GTA clone at first glance but when you play it, you find out it’s really not and it’s almost a mix between any free-roaming Spider-Man game and Assassins Creed.

You play as Cole, a normal citizen who’s on his way to work one day when a massive explosion wipes out the city. As you’re running from the carnage things aren’t quite as they seem when you get zapped by electricity and realise you’ve been given new powers to fire lightning bolts from your hands, recharge your energy from anything with power nearby, and blast stuff to kingdom-come.

Of course, the story follows lots of twists and turns involving government conspiracies and weird hallucinations as you complete story objectives and side missions that help to make you more powerful. As you progress through the game you get to throw lightning grenades, heal people and steal their life energy amongst other cool things. You also have moral choices to make which affect which power-ups you can use going forward.

The main reason this isn’t like GTA is the fact you can’t drive cars. The excuse is your energy blows them up, so you spend most of the time climbing buildings and running over rooftops. You’ll also find lots of goodies high up so I hope you’re not scared of heights. The game does a good job of guessing what you want to do when you make a jump which makes it possible to leap, scale, slide and swing around the city with ease. Occasionally you’ll fall to your death into deadly water but luckily you start again almost where you fell.

Although the game can get a bit repetitive in the middle, it does really ramp up again before the end and is a slick action game with some cool missions and plenty of bad ‘Reapers’ to fry, capture and run away from.

If you want a game which shows off how well your PS3 can throw around polygons which also entertains with a great story and presentation, it’s definitely worth a look. InFamous for the Playstation 3 gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

It’s rumoured David Jaffe is working on a new Twisted Metal game. The driving/fighting games were fantastic on the PSOne and a leaked email reveals he’s at least making a new driving game which also features violence. As long as it keeps it off the real roads that’s fine by me.

You may be shocked to hear I’ve never seen any of the Godfather movies. And I understand your amazement, I get just as shocked when people tell me they’ve never seen Star Wars. So, the good news is I’ll judge The Godfather II on its own merits as a game and not on whether it follows the plot of the film closely.

You play as Dominic, a member of the Corleone family who’s soon promoted after Aldo is shot dead in Cuba. Incidentally you played as in the first game. And so you’re directed by Michael to take over New York, Miami and Cuba itself using intimidation, rackets, some wise words and lots of violence. Like the first game, it plays similar to GTA 4 in the way you drive to a location, complete a mission, then move onto the next one. The difference here is the skill you use to get what you want and how you manage your made men when it comes to protecting the rackets you’ve already created from other rival gangs.

To help you achieve king-like status you can recruit people with specialisms. Some can help you sneak into places the back way, others can blow things up and some can heal you in battle. You can also send them away to blow up objectives or protect areas whilst you take even more people with you to do away another part of the gang.

As you progress you get better weapons, bullet proof vests and even armoured cars to make you even more powerful. Unfortunately, it is possible to get a little too powerful and the game then gets a bit too easy.

For me, the most fun I had was intimidating shop owners, brothel mistresses and casino owners using fists, weapons and a fair amount of smashing their stuff up in front of them. Grabbing hold of people and slapping them about never gets tired and you can even still grab them by the collar and give them a punch in the chops whilst a cut scene is playing. Take it too far and you can kill them or get into a fight so watch the meter at the top of the screen so you know when to stop.

When it comes to presentation, everything is more than functional but don’t expect quite the atmosphere of GTA 4. Think more Saints Row 2 with a bit of spit and polish and you’ll know what to expect. Voice acting’s good though with the usual New York accents you’d expect from a gangster flick.

If you also fancy a bit of multiplayer action there are also a few modes to dip into. You play as a henchman and money you win or lose carries over to the single player campaign – useful if you want some quick cash early on.

If you wanted to play through the film’s story you’ll be disappointed but if you want a gangster game that loosely keeps the same theme, this is worth a look. The Godfather II gets a very good 7 out of 10.

Henry Hatsworth is yet another fantastic game for the DS and another shining example of how great the DS can be if its two screens are used in the correct way.

You play as the afore-mentioned Professor Hatsworth as you perform platforming duties on the top screen and puzzling on the bottom screen. Whilst on the search for a golden suit you accidentally open a gateway to the puzzle realm and lots of cute but deadly creatures stand in your way as you run, leap, cut and shoot your way through the levels. Once you defeat an enemy, it falls into the puzzle on the touch screen. Press the X button at any time and you enter the puzzle to shift blocks horizontally to make groups of three. Do this and they disappear. You’ll need to use this to make the enemy blocks go away before they get back to the top screen where they’ll try and get their revenge. The puzzle can also be used to collect health and power ups and to increase the strength of any projectiles you may be firing at the time.

Fill up your super meter on the right and you can touch the screen to wear a big indestructible robot suit. This bit reminds me of Michael Jackson’ Moonwalker only not as rubbish.

It may require a bit of multi-tasking to keep your eyes on both screens at once, but the good news is everything works incredibly well. The platforming controls are tight and there’s enough variety to keep you playing right to the end. There are also some boss battles as you’d expect which have the usual attack patterns to learn and avoid.

Presentation also fits the game perfectly. It’s all very ‘Round the World in 80 Days’ with some funny characters and scripts. The gibberish noises they make when they speak can get a bit annoying but thankfully you only hear this during the cut-scenes. If you’ve finished GTA Chinatown Wars and you’re looking for something else to keep you amused on the bus or the train, this could definitely be it. Henry Hatsworth gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

Vin Diesel is a gamer, which should be good news if he’s in a game and he’s providing his likeness and his voice. Tigon Studios oversaw Escape from Butcher Bay and it was one of the best games on the Xbox, so can Vin appear in yet another fantastic game, this time in Barcelona instead of space? Well, it’s complicated and I’ll explain why.

Wheelman takes the GTA-style open world of racing and gun combat and puts the emphasis on driving. When pelting along at full speed it feels like you’re playing Burnout which can’t be a bad thing, and with a flick of the right analogue stick you can ram other cars to the left, right or in front and cause them to flip over in a satisfying ball of flames. You can also ‘Air Jack’ other vehicles by locking onto them and leaping from the car you’re driving onto the roof of the other, yanking out the driver, thus seamlessly continuing your escape or pursuit if your car was on fire.

You won’t spend much time on foot but when it’s called for you can lock onto enemies and duck behind objects if you need to clear out an enemy gang. You can also use your bullets inside the car as well in the form of ‘Aimed Shots’ and ‘Cyclone’ super moves. If you have enough focus in your focus meter acquired from driving well, you can tap the d-pad to slow everything down and get a view from inside the car. Now you can destroy cars, bikes and road blocks by lining up your crosshair with the target and releasing a single deadly shot.

It all sounds and looks good doesn’t it? The problem just comes with some of the execution. To begin with, loading screens appear between every mission if you choose to select them from the PDA without driving there yourself. Because a lot of missions are relatively short that’s a lot of loading screens you’ll be staring at. The side missions are also a bit samey. There are lots of different missions dotted round the city such as escaping the cops, being a taxi driver, performing hits etc, but once you’ve done one, they don’t vary enough when you do another one in a different location.

When it comes to how the game looks, the Unreal engine provides a great frame rate and speedy action, but some of the textures look dreadful. Bullet holes sometimes float in front of objects and Vin himself looks like Mr Potato Head. He looked better in the Xbox Riddick game. Reflections on cars are also cheated, they’re not real-time reflections of what’s around you so you end up with the same building and skyline following you around. Look behind you and it’s nowhere to be seen – creepy!

Wheelman certainly provides some brainless action and I’m sure the film provides the same – just don’t expect any deep gameplay or that extra spit and polish we’ve seen from recent triple-A titles. Wheelman gets a fun 6 out of 10.

Having enjoyed all the GTA games including the original top-down ones on the PC, I was looking forward to playing it on the DS. I was, however, concerned Rockstar were being a little ambitious squeezing it onto Nintendo’s little machine but the good news is, it’s incredibly enjoyable and uses the hardware perfectly.

You play as a rich guy called Huang Lee who’s come to Liberty City to deliver a family heirloom in the shape of a sword to your uncle. Unfortunately you’re robbed and left to die at the beginning of the game and so go about trying to get the sword back, doing jobs for your uncle and other unpleasant characters along the way.

Missions are what you’d expect from a GTA game. There are races, deliveries, assassinations and even salvage missions which constantly vary to keep the interest levels up. There’s also a drug dealing aspect which is important to earn money to in turn buy weapons, safe houses and cars with.

Like the old school games, the view is top-down but it’s also in 3D. Once again the city feels like it’s living and breathing around you and it’s amazing how playing in this way again feels so good. Rockstar have taken what worked with the newer 3D titles and applied it here. All the 3D action takes place on the top screen and all the 2D cut scenes and mini games are on the touch screen. Most of the time you’ll be using the touch screen to view the GPS. You can set routes by touching hyperlinks from emails containing missions and then these show up on your GPS. It all works great, my only gripe is you sometimes crash when you take your eyes off the top screen to look at where to go – something which can lead to mission failure if you’re chasing someone or have a time limit.

The touch screen is also used for filling molotovs at gas stations, assembling sniper rifles, searching skips and wallets and hotwiring cars. Of course, it’s also tightly written and very funny in places and there’s multiplayer modes both locally and over Wi-Fi.

There’s so much to do in here and technically it’s up there with Zelda and Metroid Prime Hunters. Chinatown Wars gets an almost perfect 9 out of 10.

The 2009 Video Game BAFTAS have been dished out and it’s caused a bit of a stir. GTA IV didn’t get anything, Call of Duty 4 won best gameplay, story and character and player’s choice and Dead Space won in both sound categories.

Little Big Planet got best artistic achievement, Race Driver: GRID got best sports title and Left 4 Dead got the best multiplayer game BAFTA.

What’s caused most of a stir though is Steven Spielberg’s Boom BLOXGuitar Hero and the like and Super Mario Galaxy winning best game. Some think BAFTA were playing it safe by staying away from violence. Try telling that to all those poor Goombas Mario jumps on all the time.

Rockstar have just released this new video of the forthcoming GTA Chinatown Wars. The latest instalment in the Grand Theft Auto series lands on the Nintendo DS and takes full advantage of the stylus to enhance game play. So you’re done with Nico Bellic and you’re itching for some more GTA action. Well thank the Lordy Lord for some truly decent downloadable content from Rockstar in the form of The Lost and Damned. This extra gameplay is absolutely huge, delivering over 10 hours of story gameplay, along with extra street races, gang wars and mini games to enjoy – as well as new music and TV shows to keep you amused if you’re fed up with shooting.

So what’s going on this time? Well, in a story running alongside Nico’s antics, you play as Johnny Klubitz, vice-president of biker gang The Lost. Since your big boss Billy’s been in rehab the streets have got safer and the gangs have been getting on pretty well. Of course, at the start of the game Billy’s released back into the community and the usual sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll antics begin.

The great news is that straight away, I was more engaged with these leather-clad thugs than I ever was with Nico. The conflict between Johnny and Billy bubbles like a pressure cooker and Billy reminds me of an intimidating Dennis Hopper when he’s being his most scary. Facial animations are superb and there’s a real sense of drama and pathos throughout.

So enough about the story and action, what’s it like to play? The good news is, as tight as ever. Most of the time you’ll be riding bikes around Liberty City and Rockstar have made them even smoother to control. They’re actually my number one choice of transport in this expansion and that’s definitely new for me. There’s also some cool new weapons, such as the sawn-off shotgun and a very tasty grenade launcher to scare your enemies witless.

When it comes to missions, there’s a variety of where and how you fight but it’s what you’d expect in terms of GTA. Ride somewhere, kill loads of people or nick something or blow something up, then go to the next mission, escape the cops or follow someone to a new location. Most of the time, you’ll have your gang with you to back you up who actually improve in combat as they go on missions with you without dying. Another great new addition is mid-mission checkpoints, something that will have you cursing less if you’re between locations in a mission and accidentally drive off a cliff or into the water.

So single player is typical GTA fodder with a little extra spit and polish, but there’s also so much more with new multiplayer additions. There are new street races on bikes where you fight on the move Road Rash style, new multiplayer battles titled ‘Witness Protection’ and ‘Own the City’ and a ‘Chopper vs Chopper’ mode where a bike takes on a helicopter.

There are some minor annoyances such as your team mates getting in the way in combat and on the road but these won’t spoil your fun in a major way. This has to be one of the best DLC packages there is – some would say it could have been released as a full price title all on its own so it can’t get any less than a great value 9 out of 10.
