Worms Open Warfare 2 review

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

I’ve got Worms. Urgh I hear you all say but you know what I’m talking about, not the ones that sit in your stomach or make your bum itch, I’m talking about Worms with weapons and attitude in Worms Open Warfare 2.

The first game on the DS didn’t quite sit as well as it should have and I actually preferred the PSP version. Luckily, lots more thought has gone into this version so you’ll soon be throwing hand grenades, calling airstrikes and ninja roping your way round the levels in no time and loving every minute of it.

As usual the aim in the main game is to wipe out the other teams, by blowing them up, shooting them, drowning them or sending an exploding sheep out to get them. Strangely, you don’t really need to use the touch screen as the buttons have been configured so well, but the option’s there if you want to. You can view the whole action over both screens or do what I do and use the top screen as an overview map, as you can’t zoom in and out on the DS which is a bit of a shame.

There’s a few new weapons in this game such as the Boomerang and the sentry gun which riddles any Worm foolish enough to get too close with bullets.

It’s also great you can play this with a friend with another DS in the same room but also over Wi-Fi, which really opens this game up as a fantastic turn-based strategy game everyone should own. Your stats even go on a leaderboard so you can show you’re truly the best at commanding your team in Worm War 2.

There are also some great new modes. There’s a puzzle mode where you must get your lone worm to the exit using only the items given to you, and a parachute mode where you must blow on the DS to give the chute lift as you guide your worm round lots of obstacles. You may look silly but it really fels like you’re giving your worm some lift.

I can’t recommend this enough if you like silly multiplayer games. It’s fun, addictive and just the sort of game that belongs on the DS or PSP.

It gets a truly excellent 8 out of 10.

Army of Two

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

OK hands up if you like co-op mode in games such as Gears of War? I can’t see if you’ve actually got your hands up or not by I know I enjoyed co-op in Gears of War and that means I’ll probably like playing EA’s Army of Two as the whole game is based around this premise.

Instead of co-op being a game mode in this one, it’s the actual game as you and a real life partner or adaptive AI soldier use two-man tactics in a third-person warzone to win the battles and make it out alive.

The story’s not too original, there’s a global conspiracy that threatens the safety of the entire world and your two man team has to stop all this naughty business and uncover the truth by using the one thing that people only seem take notice of these days – violence.

It’s all about to man tactics, so one minute you may be laying down covering fire so your team mate can make it across the battlefield, or your buddy might be sniping from a high position, or taking care of you as you parachute in to a situation. In a similar vein to the Splinter Cell co-op mode, you’ll also be helping each other repel down buildings and giving each other a leg up to climb up walls and ledges.

From the look of the trailer it doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously which is refreshing for a war game. I’ll be getting ready to practice my virtual buddy high-five in time for a full review when it comes out for PS3 and Xbox 360 in November.

Guilty Gear Judgement review

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Todays review is Guilty Gear Judgement on the PSP and this one’s special because you actually get two games in one. You get the new side-scrolling Judgement game but also Guilty Gear X2 Reload which is your more traditional 2D one-on-one beat’em up.

Let’s tackle judgement first. If you’ev ever played Final Fight, Double Dragon or Golden Axe you’ll know what to expect. You pick one of five characters from the Guity Gear universe and fight from left to right, with lots of enemies attacking you at once. Clear the screen and you’re told to GO to your right and fight more. Occasionally there’s the odd object to smash for bonuses and health and you get to fight some tricky end of level bosses every other stage.

It’s pretty standard fare but you do get to use nearly all the moves you would use in the previous Guilty Gear games and you’re able to move in just about three dimensions to get round the back of your enemies and beat them into a pulp. You can play this on your own or get a friend with a PSP to team up as you fight through the game. Problem is, whilst it’s very nice to look at, games have moved on since the old arcade beat’ em ups and unless you love this retro feel, you’ll get bored quite soon of mashing buttons and there’s no real reason to play through the game with the other four characters after you’ve beat it once.

So it’s good news we’ve got X3 Reload bundled in there too. This is a classic 2d fighter where you fight one on one and work your way through all your opponents in arcade, survival and versus mode. There are 23 characters to choose from and they’re all very different in the way they look, even if all the special moves are triggered with the usual Street Fighter d-pad rolling.

Again, you can beat the game just by mashing the buttons and it gets tired pretty quickly unless you have a human opponent to play against.

If you love your Japanese fighters you’ll like this too. To everyone else, it’s just better than average.

It’s good but it won’t hold your interest for too long. 6 out of 10.

Guitar Hero 2 review

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

It’s time to rock out with Guitar Hero 2. I know this one’s been out on the 360 for some months now but it’s still selling well and I’ve only just got hold of it due to a ‘guitar shortage’. The the neighbours can see and hear me doing all sorts of strange things in my lounge and this time I’m not going to get arrested for it.

The premise is simple. You look at a fret board on screen as lots of coloured blobs that correspond to the five coloured buttons on your guitar work their way down. Hit the buttons at the right time in time to the music and you’ll be a rock legend in your own house.

We’ve seen this type of game before with PaRappa the Rapper, Guitar Freaks and Guitaroo Man but what makes this is the guitar peripheral. To actually have an axe around your neck you can swing around and gurn with can’t be beaten and you really do get the hairs go up on the back of your neck when you pull off a perfect combo, get you whammy bar into action and even activate star power mode by flipping the car up 90 degrees to get more points.

The songs have something for everyone too. Personally I like Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box, Message in a Bottle by the Police, Monkey Wrench by the Foo Fighters and Sweet Child Of Mine by Guns and Roses to name but a few. You’ve actually got almost 50 songs on the 360 version, 10 more bonus tracks and you can download extra content from Xbox live. Speaking of online play, it’s a shame there’s no proper online battle and duet modes but there is a leader board. If you’re very VERY good at this game and play it on the hardest level you may just get on there.

My only gripe with the game is it makes me anyway feel very very sick after just a couple of songs. Because of the constant movement of the fret board, when I look away I get a weird moving sensation in the centre of my vision as my eyes try to make sense of what they’ve just been staring at without blinking for 10 minutes. I also get hand cramp but with practice, that should go.

This game may be punishing on the senses but it makes you feel like a true rock legend. For that reason alone, air guitar is dead. Long live Guitar Hero, 9 out of 10.
