Patapon review

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I first heard about Patapon at a Pro Evolution Soccer event when I was talking to a lovely lady called Carly from Sony PR. She said this was the next game on its was and I had to double-take. Patawhat? I said. She said it was hard to explain and now I see why.

Basically it’s a game in the same vein as LocoRoco, although it’s a rhythm-based strategy game. The aim is to command your little tribe of Patapons from left to right, fighting and marching to the shrine at the end. You do this by hammering out tribal chants using the triangle, square, circle and x buttons in groups of four. You can march onward, attack, defend and even perform miracles to make it rain to put out lava so you can cross hot deserts.

As you march your little eyeball-shaped friends across the land you also pick up items that help you build more troops at the tree of life or even gifts for a little fella who plays a trumpet to stop a tree’s head itching so he then gives you something else. Surreal I know but there’s something about this game that makes you want to play on.

Although a simple idea, there is a lot of strategy to this game. Before you go into battle you can select which troops you want and equip them with the correct weapons, shield and armour for the situation they’re going into.

The game also has its own unique style which will appeal to gamers and also non-gamers alike. Just like Loco-Roco, this one will have your partner picking it up and playing it as it’s not your usual fare.

Patapon is simple but at the same time genius, so it gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

Fifa Street 3 review

Friday, February 29th, 2008

So another year brings another sequel to one of EA’s sports brands. Fifa Street 3 is the latest on offer from EA Sports BIG after a 2 year holiday and this means it’s a sports game with an arcade twist, an exaggerated artistic slant and a cool soundtrack to make the sport bigger and better than normal ‘soccer’.

The idea behind Fifa Street is simple. It’s 5-a-side football played in parking lots, on beaches and rooftops and you’ve just got to bang more goals in than your opponents, oh and it helps if you look cool whilst you’re doing it too.

The first thing you’ll notice when you boot up the game is how odd the player characters are. Odd in a good way, a bit like Peter Crouch who’s one of the faces of the game. I’m not sure how ‘street’ Crouchy is here and they make him super-skinny but somehow cool with it. A bit like Shaggy from Scooby-doo. Rooney’s built like a brick outhouse and all the other characters have exaggerated features as if someone in Leicester Square has grabbed them and made them sit still for half an hour while they’ve done a caricature of them.

So, you can pick your international teams in quick play and choose you faves from the many superstars on offer or, in challenge mode, choose your team by skills. Some are speedy, some stocky and some are tricksters. All these skills will help you show off on the pitch and score some tasty goals. As you play, with a flick of the right stick you can do little t ricks that boost your gamebreaker bar. Fill this up, tap R1 and you suddenly the music ramps up, the ball has a Technicolor trail behind it and you can strike from distance to surprise your rivals.

This one’s actually a lot of fun to play. It looks cool and it does feel good when you skin a defender by nutmegging them, doing a cheeky Croyf-turn or flicking the ball over their head. You can also run up walls and perform somersaults all in the name of showboating. It’s actually fun playing this simgle player which I don’t really like doing in footy games. I’m a massive Pro Evo player but I really liked the different gameplay on offer here.

And the games don’t last too long either. You can set a time limit to score as many goals as possible, or a goal limit. Or you can set challenges where you can only score with headers and volleys, then get your friends on or offline to see if they can rise to the occasion.

Fifa Steet 3’s great fun so it gets a very good 7 out of 10.

Dead Rising

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Capcom may be sued over their Dead Rising Game. After 2 years the owners of the Dawn of the Dead movie rights have discovered it has a striking resemblance to the horror movie set in a shopping mall and want money from the sales of the game. Their realisation of this fact is just as slow as a shuffling zombie.

PS3 rumours

Friday, February 29th, 2008

The BBC have been shown a top-secret Sony title for the PS3 that’s not out until 2009. Apparently they did it to show just what the console can do and the reporter was left ‘speechless’. Guess all us mortals will have to wait a few more months to find out just what it is.

Metal Gear Solid 4 release date

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Metal gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been given a launch date of June 12th!!!

The game will be released on a Blu-Ray disc containing both Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Kojima Productions’ Metal Gear Online – a dedicated online title that uses locations and gameplay elements from Guns of the Patriots. Together, they form a stunning conclusion to Hideo Kojima’s involvement in the final chapter to the Solid Snake saga.

With the anticipation for Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Online growing at a phenomenal rate, Konami will whet appetites with a public beta version of Metal Gear Online before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4. Full details of the public beta program will be announced shortly.

Concluding Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid saga, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is set in a battle-scarred future where huge conglomerates fight for supremacy using armies of hand-picked mercenaries. This devastated world is seen through the battle-weary eyes of an older Solid Snake who has been charged with infiltrating a number of key locations across the globe, including the Middle East and South America. As such, the epic end to Snake’s story offers ground-breaking combat elements, a refined control system that offers unprecedented control over the aged hero, and the tying up of key plot lines and loose ends.

Similarly, the accompanying Metal Gear Online features all the stunning stealth and combat elements of Guns of the Patriots, as it drops the player into a series of war zones and game options. With all-out ‘Last Man Standing’ battles to rescue and protection missions, Metal Gear Online effortlessly transfers the sublime control system of the series to an online competition, creating an absorbing battle between like-minded fans.
