Rayman Raving Rabbids 3

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

A hot new video showing what seems like a teaser for Rayman Raving Rabbids 3 has hit the web today. The video shows a Rabbid playing around with a Wii Balance Board, so it’s no unreasonable to guess that another Rayman Raving Rabbid Wii mini game collection from Ubisoft is on its way, this time using Nintendo’s Wii Fit board rather than just the Wii Remote and Nunchuck.

Considering the second Rabbids game for Wii was so much like the first it can only be a good thing that a new control method will be in place to spice things up. Even though this is exciting, we’re still waiting for the big announcements to the Wii Balance Board’s line up of games, 1080 Snowboarding, Tony Hawk’s pro skater and what about Jet Set Radio Wii; wouldn’t they be just awesome for the Wii and its Balance board? We’ll warn you and Jonathan Ross you know when we have a Rayman Raving Rabbids 3 release date.

Discussion: What games would you like to see for the Wii Balance Board?

GTA IV PC release date

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

One eagle-eyed reader of our blog a release date for GTA 4 for pc has been spotted in the manual of the Xbox 360 version of GTAIV. Apparently on 13th December 2008 Niko and Roman will be finding a place on your Windows start menu just in time for the Christmas. No details on what additional GTA4 PC version features will be included, if it will be a Vista-only release or what minimum hardware will be required - but best put in a word to Santa for the latest Alienware hardware just in case.

Update: November 18th US / November 21st 2008 UK - CONFIRMED GTA4 RELEASE DATE

Wii Fit review

Friday, April 25th, 2008

YouTube

With Wii Fit Nintendo are hoping to end gym memberships forever. With videogames being blamed for health problems and kids being overweight, this does the opposite by doing what Brain Training did for the mind on the body.

It comes with a balance board, basically a set of flat white scales that also measure your centre of balance. You stand on it and do a number of exercises and games to get you in shape. There’s yoga, muscle workouts, balance games and aerobic exercises and every day the game tests your Wii Fit age based on your height, weight, BMI and balance.

As far as having a personal trainer goes, you can choose from a man or a woman to tell you what to do. I went for the woman simply because the man had Frank Lampard’s annoying face. They then go through the motions whether it’s lunges, yoga or press-ups and you treat them as a mirror image. The balance board also knows if you’re doing the moves correctly judging on the pressure points it measures whilst you break a sweat. This really works as you do the exercises at the right speed and get the technique right - you even get encouragement to keep you going.

Games use your Mii characters. Aerobic games range from spinning your hips to catch hooplas as you’re on the board or using the board as a step. You can even put the Wiimote in your pocket and jog on the spot as you go for a run through a park, other Miis in your system passing by. It’s quite funny having Larry David and Hitler waving at you or throwing hoops at you.

The balance games are also lots of fun. You can ski, head footballs amongst other games.

This is a great way to get your general fitness up but I am concerned by the first reading it gives you. Simply by not balancing well it can tell a fit, slim 24 year old they have the body of a 44 year old with a weak body when all they’ve actually done is have a couple of glasses of wine.

Still, if you stick with this game on a daily basis, unlocking new games and exercises as you go and setting targets to reach, I’m sure it will prove very beneficial. The Wii fit release date is today so go out and buy the wii fit balance board now!

Wii Fit gets a fantastic 9 out of 10.

Dark Sector review

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Dark Sector is yet another 3rd-person shooter for the Xbox 360 and PS3 but this one does have something a little different about it which I’ll go into in a second. In the game you play as a reluctant assassin-type-soldier-bloke called Hayden as you infiltrate an old fortress in Russia to destroy a weaponised virus. Unfortunately, in the first level, your right arm gets infected by the very virus you’re trying to stop and you get a very cool power which you’ll you’ll use for most of the rest of the game.

Combat is nicked straight from Gears of War. You press a button to take cover, then pop out and fire at enemies as you advance. Even running has been nicked as you hold a button and steer left and right as you dash for cover. As well as using a pistol, machine guns and shotguns, your fancy new weapon is a razor-sharp disc which grows out of your hand called the Glaive. You can chuck this at enemies to cut off arms, legs and heads complete with lots of lovely claret splashing all over the place.

Soon into the game you can also apply after-touch and steer it towards frightened enemies, taking down more than one at a time. On the PS3 you can use the sixaxis to steer it and for once, it’s suited here. You can even throw the thing into fire, ice and electricity to give it new powers, then use it to solve puzzles and fight bosses.

The game’s fun but inconsistent. You may get bored of running through similar levels before you reach the end of the game and the graphics vary from eye-bleedingly great to mediocre. Also, there’s no real sense of progression as you play. You can upgrade some weapons but strangely these aren’t available from the off if you want to replay the game.

Two multiplayer modes have also been thrown in, one where you play as Hayden and everyone else, as a normal human with a gun, tries to put you down.

It’s good and may fill a hole before Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gears of War 2. So for that reason, my review of Dark Sector gets 7 out of 10.
