The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian review

YouTube The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian review

Are you getting the free Gamesweasel video show?

We all know Traveller’s Tales are very good at making whacky games like Crash Bandicoot, Lego Star Wars and recently Lego Indiana Jones – with Prince Caspian they’ve had to reign the sillyness in to make a game that’s got very similar mechanics to the drop in-drop out gameplay of Lego games but also something with the epic feel of the movie.

If you haven’t seen it, the foppish Prince Caspian is helped by the Pevensie family and a menagerie of beasts to save the kingdom from the rule of the evil King Miraz. Cue some fairly long levels set around castles, beaches, caves and forests with plenty of hacking and slashing, simple switch flicking and puzzle solving and switching of characters with the touch of a button.

It all looks very nice and there’s a fair few characters to play as, each with their own abilities. The problem is, being a fully-grown man, the game doesn’t really entertain on a level higher than a ten year old would enjoy – a pity when I know they can do this with Indy and Star Wars. It’s all a bit confusing too – I haven’t seen the movie and the live action cut-scenes almost give you whiplash by rudely interrupting and confusing you between missions.

To progress through the game you have to use teamwork, either with an AI partner or a friend. You have to stand on platforms at the same time, flick switches and keep each other’s torches lit in dark caves. Opening chests for bonus items is a nightmare though with far too much button bashing to get them open. I think they’ve slightly overdone the God of War mechanic here.

It feels like I’m playing just a re-skinned version of the Lego franchise with none of the charm and humour. The game’s functional but not anything to get incredibly excited about – a bit like owning a Ford Mondeo. Prince Caspian gets 6 out of 10.

Super Smash Bros Brawl review

I’ve never really liked the Super Smash Bros. games. Correction – I’ve actually never really given them a chance. Seeing four cutesy Nintendo characters go hell-for-leather at each other just looked plain confusing and I never really grasped what those percentages were for at the bottom of the screen. Then, randomly, someone seems to win when someone goes flying off the screen quicker than a Big Brother housemate’s celebrity profile.

This time I actually read the instruction manual, sat down, gritted my teeth and got stuck in – and you know what? I really like it! This is another Fan Boy’s treasure chest. Not only are all your favourite characters in the game – there’s also a few obscure ones from days of old chucked in there too and Solid Snake and Sonic. You also get to play over tonnes of levels, all with themes and music from the individual games.

The game’s also chock-full of options. You can play on your own, with up to three friends on one console, then with loads more in a round-robin, over Wi-Fi as teams of two or every man, Pokémon or Pikmin for himself, do challenges, design your own levels or play through a single player campaign called the Subspace Emissary. This is the only place the game falls down as it tries to apply the arena combat mechanics to a side-scrolling adventure. It’s quite long and gets a bit dull soon into it. They do, however, piece it together with some of the best-looking cut scenes yet seen on the Wii.

There are also tonnes of collectables in the game. You collect figures as you play through solo mode with each character, trophies, stickers, cards and music as you go along and strangely, it’s quite addictive. You can also play the game with your controller of choice so it’s pretty easy to get stuck in however you like to use your fingers and thumbs.

This game should keep you playing for months to come both online and at home. Finally, I get what it’s all about. If you ever wanted Mario to punch Princess Peach in the face for all the times she’s made him rescue her – now you can. Super Smash Bros. Brawl gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

Mass Effect trilogy PC version

The Mass Effect trilogy will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 according to an Australian gaming magazine. Apparently Bioware don’t want to compromise on quality by spreading themselves over more than one machine. Does that mean no Mass Effect trilogy PC version?
