In a similar vein to the Mario Kart Grand Wii contest in April, Nintendo have this time announced a special nationwide tournament to celebrate the long awaited release of Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii. On the 28th June you can head to a selection of Gamestation stores around the country to take part in a mammoth 64 player (2×32) knockout competition. Unlike the Mario Kart event, the grand prize isn’t a car but instead the winner from each store will bag a Samsung 40” Full-HD LCD TV and a Samsung Home Theatre System, including a DivX-compatible DVD player, subwoofer and 5 Dolby Digital stereo speakers. Runners up in each store will receive an iPod Nano!
You’ll need to be quick and register your participation ASAP as spaces are limited.

This is one of the few chances us British public get to try out new and upcoming games from all of the big name developers. Details are sparse at the moment but I would expect it to be similar to last year, full of games, the odd celebrity and lots of fun but silly events to take part in.

Last month my girlfriend and I attended the Play.com live event where thousands of punters came to Wembley Stadium to play the latest videogames. On show were a variety of games for all ages as well as other things happening on stage compared by Iain Lee and the bewildered-looking Gemma Atkinson.

Because I was walking round the event with a camera I didn’t actually get to go on any of the games but I did get to see what was on show and what was playable. The new Soul Calibur was there in force with lots of screens for people kick each other in the face in front of – and people got to gamble themselves silly in aid of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 – win the most chips and you win a holiday to Sin City.

Also available to play was Rock Band. If you can afford it and you have the space you and your mates can play guitar, drums and bass and warble over the top of your favourite tunes.

Not-playable was Ghostbusters which looked cool thanks to the Ray-Parker Junior soundtrack and being able to fight the green blob in the ballroom – nice! Also, what I could see of the Bourne Conspiracy looked pretty cool too.

Upstairs Sony were showing off GT5 prologue with some racing pods. Pity you’ll be playing at home with a non-rumbling Sixaxis pad.

And there was some entertainment. Young girls waited for ages to see a band I never heard of called Saving Aimee, some Vegas showgirls danced and didn’t even get a clap for their troubles, a young lady dressed as a Soul Calibur character didn’t quite know what to do with her sword and Darth Vader looked – shorter than in the films.

It may have been a wet weekend but everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves – if not for the games, then just to be in the warm out of the rain. Be sure to check out the video in episode 42 to see Iain Lee, Gemma Atkinson, Darth Vader and Slimer in the flesh.

There is some good news for Bioshock fans and that is Take Two have confirmed that a Bioshock sequel is now in the works and should be heading to our shores in 2009.

Needless to say that I’m very excited by a follow up to Bioshock, but some of you may not have heard of, let alone played the original yet.

For those of you who are new to Bioshock, be known that it was a massive hit for the Xbox 360 and PC last year. If I had to describe Bioshock in twenty words or less I would say…

Bioshock is a mix of; Half Life 2 and the movies Trainspotting and Voyage to the bottom of the Sea.

Now if that doesn’t give you a good enough idea then you should read Matt’s insightful Bioshock Review where he gave it a stonkingly good 9 out of 10.

Just been to a secret Street Fighter IV game hands-on event at Capcom Headquarters. When walking into the room I was quickly ushered out before I could join the throng of journos clambering to get their hands on the game and made to sign an NDA so I wouldn’t talk about any top secret stuff that they don’t want you guys to know yet.

I can, however, tell you that it looks fantastic and it’s modern, yet still retains the look and feel of the older games. Although with a 2D style, all the characters are in full 3d and fight like you remember them to from left to right and vice-versa. I played as Blanka in the single player mode and somehow managed to win three fights in a row (a feat which hadn’t been done yet during the morning session may I add). We then all had to leave the room while the multiplayer build was set up so we didn’t see any characters they want to keep under wraps. Guile and Chun-Li were paired off to fight each other and for some reason Guile’s corn-like hair’s shorter and Chun-Li’s thighs are fatter.

Each player has a super move which they can unleash when they’ve made a number of hits, but also revenge moves which can be activated to devastating effect if you’re taking a bit too much of a beating. This can certainly turn the tables if you’re about to lose.

Needless to say I got pummelled by a human opponent, so I grabbed a can of Diet Coke, a packet of crisps and a Twirl and left promptly.

No word yet on a Street Fighter IV release date but remember to subscribe to the Gamesweasel blog rss feed to keep informed with more updates when we hear about them, including a Street Fighter IV game review and a Street Fighter IV trailer.

I went to an event for the new Baby Pals game from THQ last night. While I was there I also got a massage and had my nails done (really, they were horrid and now look very nice).

Anyway, it’s best to describe the game as the equivalent of Nintendogs, or Dogz, Catz or Babiez or whatever they’ll come up with next. Basically, you choose how your baby looks by choosing how big its head is, skin tone and eye colour and then you give it a name. Of course, being 31 and not a girl under 10 I thought I’d try to have a bit of fun and call my baby Satan. Unfortunately there wasn’t an option to give it red eyes.

Once your baby is ‘born’ you then have to look after it by feeding it, changing its nappy and helping it go off to sleep via a number of mini games using the touch screen. I also gave my baby a bath but got too much soap on its face and it didn’t like it. I hope kids won’t use this game as a guide to really bringing up a child or I can see lots of kids being blinded before they’re one year old with small styluses. Personally, I find it all a bit creepy.

But seriously, this game wasn’t made for me and this game will definitely appear to girls under 10. It’s like having a virtual doll in a DS without having real dolls lying around the house wetting themselves, babbling and vomiting or whatever they can do now. Highly recommended if your little one wants to play at being a Mum before she thinks all that stuff’s gross.

Popped along to a Sega event where they were showing off some of their new Wii titles – being Sega Superstars Tennis, House of the Dead 2 and Sega Bass Fishing. Of course, all of them use the remote and some make you feel a bit silly. Samba De Amigo is the monkey with maracas game. Had a quick go whilst trying to remain as cool as you can at a games event.

Sega Superstars Tennis looked cool with loads of Sega characters playing what is in effect Virtua Tennis. U-La-La, Alex Kidd, Sonic, Dr Eggman, NiGHTS etc all play against each other. They all have their own special powers and can play in themed areas such as Virtua Cop (Virtua Squad in this game because it’s banned in Germany). House of the Dead (again renamed because of the Germans), OutRun and others were there. I wanted to see the dead dudes from Altered Beast in there, “Rise from you graves”.

Sega Bass Fishing made you use the Nunchuck and Wiimote like an actual rod but I had trouble catching the Bass-tards.
