Tatsunoko vs Capcom Ultimate All Stars review

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Tetsunoko vs Capcom is the latest in the vs series of 2D fighting games from Capcom which pits the most beloved of their characters against another brand. We’ve already seen this work very well with vs SNK and Marvel and now it’s time for the famous anime company Tetsunoko to have a go at kicking some ass.

If you’re not Japanese you’ll be forgiven for not knowing many of the characters getting in the ring with the Capcom characters but you may have heard of Jun the Swan and Ken the Eagle from what we know in the UK as Battle of the Planets. Famous Capcom fighters include Ryu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, Viewtiful Joe, MegaMan and even one of the mechs from Lost Planet. Anyway, it’s safe to say that all the fighters you can choose in this game are very colourful and have some over-the-top special moves and you can pull them off with varying degrees of difficulty depending on how you wish to play.

If you’re well-versed in these types of games you’ll want to play with a classic controller or GameCube controller. You can also play a simpler level of gameplay with the Remote and Nunchuck and even easier controls using the Remote on its own. Using just the remote it’s very simple to pull off super moves and combos using both players on your tag team at the touch of a button and a direction press on the D-pad.

There are also plenty of game modes including arcade, time attack, survival and even an online Wi-Fi mode so you can play against others all around the world.

Wii owners may be annoyed that they didn’t get Street Fighter IV but this 2D fighter really is a fantastic substitute and is a lot less serious than its HD counterpart. Even the intro movie is as Japanese and cheesy as you like and bound to put a smile on your face.

If you want a 2D fighting game with plenty of options and characters and one which anyone can play from button bashers to fighting masters, this one’s a must-have on the Wii. Tetsunoko vs. Capcom gets a kick-ass 9 out of 10.

Planet 51 The Game review

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Games released to come out at the same time as movies are usually very bad. Sometimes they work if they’re inspired by the movie or don’t have to come out to hit a movie deadline but that’s not the case with Planet 51 The Game. In the game you get to play as the ‘alien’ Lem and as the crashed astronaut Chuck as you both work together to find his spaceship and get him home. What the game basically boils down to is a series of boring tasks and races in what appears to be a sandbox environment but actually isn’t.

The game begins literally at a snail’s pace as Lem rides around on a bike. Even the ‘turbo’ doesn’t help matters as he chases bullies and tracks down his mates around the town. Other tasks involve delivering papers and cutting the lawn. Two things that aren’t fun in real life and aren’t any better if you look like a bogey either. Things get a bit better when you upgrade to cars. At least they move quicker but the controls aren’t very responsive and the collision detection is ropey as well.

The whole game also has an unfinished feel about it. Lips don’t sync to the dialogue whatsoever in cut-scenes so it looks like a badly dubbed French animation or something, and loading screens pop up all the time. Surely this can’t be because there’s too much data to load? It’s probably because they couldn’t be bothered to animate Lem or Chuck opening a door.

This is the worst kind of movie license game. It’s obviously been rushed out to cash in on the movie whilst spending the least amount of time or money on development just because it’s supposed to be a game for kids. Well, kids have standards too and as I’m a big kid I’m giving Planet 51: The Game a lame 3 out of 10.

NHL 2K10 review

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Ice Hockey’s a funny old game. Not content with playing normal hockey on a field with a ball, these guys like to slide about the ice and try to slam a puck into the net and of course have a good old scrap halfway through the game and end up in the sin bin.

And, if you’re from the UK, the rules may seem a bit confusing so it’s a good thing then, at least if you’re British, NHL 2K10 presents an arcade-style experience which is simple and easy to get into.

The first thing you’ll notice is the action tends to be very much end-to-end. Once you have the puck in your possession it’s not too tricky to hang on to it as you skate and deke round your opponents and have a slap shot at the net. It’s a bit of a hassle to keep having to hammer the right trigger to get up to speed and it would have been nice for speed to just be implemented into how far the analogue stick’s being pushed. Everything feels a little bit too ‘sticky’ on the ice but this doesn’t necessarily completely ruin the gameplay experience.

It’s also nice that your mates can jump in and play with or against you in almost any game mode. Unfortunately, there’s not really a game mode in there you can really get your teeth into over time. Franchise mode is improved over last year but it still doesn’t have the depth of EA’s main mode in their yearly ice hockey game.

The main improvement by far is the visuals. Everything has been bumped up and it all looks gorgeous. Not only the look of the players, ice and arena but also the animations as players body check each other and whizz around all over the place. If you want an ice hockey game that delivers instant arcade-style action then I’d say get this over EA’s effort. However, if you want something with a but more meat on its bones which will last you longer, this won’t be what you’re looking for. NHL 2K10 gets a good 6 out of 10.

Rabbids Go Home review

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Moving away from the party mini games of its predecessors, Rabbids Go Home takes the collect ‘em up ethos of the Katamari games and puts the silly Raving Rabbids twist on it as they try to collect as much stuff as they can from the human world to make a pile big enough so they can get to the moon. All they want is a good kip so they think the best way is to run about the place with a shopping trolley and literally scare the pants off the poor stick-thin humans.

This game is laugh out loud funny and I especially like the bit where you shake up a Rabbid stuck inside your Wii remote. You can rotate and turn it then shake it about to send him flying, and then even customise him by painting him and adding new clothes. Gok Wan would have a field day!

The main game sees you skidding about the place collecting stuff and using the Wii remote to aim and fire Rabbids to access other parts of the levels. A friend can also join in but they’re basically just limited to collecting stuff by pointing at it similar to a second player in Super Mario Galaxy. There are lots and lots of levels to play through and the game does make you laugh as little cut scenes play out as they find new items to put in their trolley. Even the reaction of the humans as you shout at them and make them semi-naked is sure to get a giggle.

My problem is that that’s all there really is to do in the game. The difficulty doesn’t change from the start and after the laughter dies down you do feel a bit like a street cleaner doing a job. It can literally feel like a chore as you pick up enough stuff to eventually get to that big round blob in the sky.

Kids will love it and it will provide some entertainment but if the Rabbids do star in another platform game, Ubisoft Montpelier had better make things a little more varied. Rabbids Go Home gets a good 6 out of 10.
