Okay so they may be corny but the Resident Evil games are a guilty pleasure of mine. I really enjoyed Mercenaries when the 3DS first came out and have been looking forward to a ‘proper’ game on the 3DS with a story ever since. Revelations tells the story between the events of console games 4 and 5 and sees you playing as three pairs of soldiers with most of the action happening on board an abandoned cruise ship as you take on the roles of Chris, Jill, Jessica and the slightly overweight but likeable Parker.

This time it’s the mysterious organisation Veltro that’s up to no good with the new T-Abyss virus which turns people and creatures into hideous monsters. They can of course be taken down with bullets and as you progress through the game to upgrade your guns to fire more than one bullet at a time, have more stopping power and deliver more of a punch. There’s also a new gadget which lets you scan your surroundings for more goodies and scan enemies in order to get extra herbs for healing.

The control method is very similar to that of Mercenaries, the good news once again being that you can change and select weapons using the touch screen quickly whilst the monsters advance. You can use the new Circle Pad Pro device with the game to give you an extra analogue stick but to be honest, you won’t feel like you need one if you play the game without one.

The main game took me just under ten hours to finish which is a fair length but once you finish that you can always play it again in hell mode to unlock an infinite rocket launcher and try Raid Mode which adds so much more to what is already a good game. In Raid Mode you can play solo or co-op locally or online in mini missions to reach the goal. Monsters now have health meters and are modified with extra speed, strength or size and there are tonnes of bonuses to earn such as new weapon mods, characters and costumes.

Without a doubt this is the best action adventure game on the 3DS so far. My only complaints are that you can’t play Raid Mode immediately without playing through the first three chapter of the campaign and you can’t walk through doors at the same time as your partner. They rudely slam in your face which does upset game flow a bit in the heart of battle. It would also be good to battle some more traditional zombies rather than the water-logged beasties and Hunters you’ll encounter on the handheld. However, if you like Resident Evil this is an essential buy so it gets 9 out of 10.

I’ve always liked the Soul Calibur games because they offer something different to the usual fighting systems of games such as Street Fighter. The vertical and horizontal attacks mixed with the ability to dodge and run around opponents in 3D space works well and the characters are pretty cool to boot, my favourites being the pirate Cervantes and Voldo, the undead dude who looks like he enjoys fetish clubs. Soul Calibur V refines this fighting system even more with some gorgeous graphics and animations and a guest character in the form of Ezio from the latest Assassin’s Creed games.

As most fighting games go there game modes you’d expect in there including arcade, versus and quick battle, but the main campaign story mode concentrates on a guy called Patroklos who’s been entrusted with the Soul Calibur sword and who must defeat Knightmare with his Soul Edge sword and also try to rescue is sister Pyrrha from her malfested possession. Stories are told via a mixture of drawings on parchment and some stunning pre-rendered visuals as well. To be honest, it’s not a very engaging one and you may find yourself skipping the storybook scenes just to get into the action and fight the next unfortunate dude who’s about to meet the sharp edge of your sword. You don’t always play as Patroklos though. As the story twists and turns you play as other folk as well which mixes things up a bit.

Character creation is back but this time there is much more you can alter, including the height and build of your character. You can store a few of these and then call them into action with a default character’s fighting style both offline and online as well.

When fighting, the main new thing you’ll notice is the Critical Edge system, which builds up as you fight and can then be used to pull off a super combo. Get this right and you can knock a massive chunk off your opponent’s health and it looks pretty cool while you do it as well.

Soul Calibur V is one of those games that gives you more back if you spend more time with it, learning the combos and nuances thoroughly in the practice mode. Take it online and starting beating people and it can become incredibly addictive. You can even compare your licence with others and log rivals so you can keep an eye on their progress and try to beat it. It works for EA with Autolog and Battlelog so there’s no reason this won’t be just as addictive.

Personally I don’t have enough ninja skills to take it online and the story mode didn’t grab me as much as Mortal Kombat’s lengthy seamless tale. It’s good, but it’s not my favourite fighting game so it gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection brings together three of Kojima’s classics and gives them a lick of paint for HD consoles. In the package you get MGS2 Sons of Liberty, MGS3 Snake Eater and MGS Peace Walker, the latter being a PSP only title and probably one of the best of the entire series.

I’ve always had a bit of a love/hate relationship with these games because whilst there are definitely classic moments in them which I’ll never forget, they also contain far too much exposition and not enough actual gameplay and revisiting 2 and 3 really hits this home. Playing Sons of Liberty also highlights how much the control system has changed for the better because going back to it after playing modern 3rd-person games is quite a shock to the system. The controls feel counter-intuitive and you will die plenty of times just because you tried to run from a crouch and end up crawling along the floor or sticking to a wall in the middle of a gunfight. Still, if you can get your head round the controls it’s definitely worth a look even though taking over as Raiden isn’t as good as playing as Snake during the opening mission.

Snake Eater makes things better in terms of control with a camera you can move about yourself and also a view that’s less top-down. It also has some superb boss battles and of course the ability to change your camouflage to suit your surroundings and feed on creatures you kill in the jungle. All that’s missing is Ant and Dec standing beside you holding cue cards and trying not to laugh. The best of the bunch, however, is Peace Walker and it really shines thanks to the use of a second analogue stick for looking and aiming which makes it even better than its native PSP version. Textures may be a bit bland from its PSP conversion but Big Boss’s older features, eye patch and free movement and aiming makes it a fantastic Metal Gear game. I almost wish these controls could be applied to the others to make sneaking more enjoyable so I’m not wrestling with how to control my character. The addition of using the Fulton recovery balloons to add to your troops and perform research for weapons also adds a nice strategy element to the game too, and of course you can play the game online as well, just as you could on the PSP.

Everything looks super-tasty in these HD remakes and there’s plenty of gameplay here for your money. If you’re coming to all these games for the first time, you may only really be able to play Peace Walker due to its slicker controls. If you played through Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater in the past as well, the nostalgia factor should just be enough to pull you through these ones again too.

In terms of value for money and quality of game, Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection gets an almost perfect 9 out of 10.

When I was first sent this game I thought Capcom had made a mistake and sent me the Marvel vs Capcom 3 Fate of Two Worlds game I’d reviewed months ago. Then I realised the word ‘ultimate’ at the beginning of the game and realised it’s almost the same game but might be worthy of your pennies if you’re a serious and want some more modes to play with. So what’s the story? Well, the good guys and bad guys from both universes decide to have a bit of a barney and then for good measure along comes Galactus with his silly helmet and decides he wants to eat the Earth as well. In single player arcade mode you fight through various enemies depending on who you choose and then fight Galactus to stop him having a snack on San Francisco or feasting on France. You can also play the game online or offline in versus mode and play through training stages to get used to your moves. If you’ve ever played Street Fighter you’ll know the deal – there are light, medium and heavy attacks and moves are activated by either charging them or rolling your thumb on the d-pad and pressing attack.

You play in teams of three so can also call them in to help you out or swap mid-battle to someone who may tactically work better against your opponent. The graphics look like something straight out of a comic book and the action is absolutely nuts when you call in a gun-toting raccoon and a guy with a flaming skull to help you out. As well as Rocket Raccoon and Ghost Rider there are tonnes of characters to choose from. The chances are your favourite will be in there, including Frank West from Dead Rising, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Chun-Li.

A new addition via a free update is Heroes and Heralds mode which lets you choose a side and fight for territory online over the period of a week. Be on the winning side and you get cool new unlocks to add to your arsenal in the form of cards which give you perks and bonuses during the fight. You collect them as you go and can stack them into groups of three to take with you before the fight. It’s a great new addition which dangles a carrot in front of you and keeps you playing. You can even play the game offline and play against the CPU if you wish, unlocking new territories and special cards as you go.

There’s certainly a lot to keep you playing in this latest fighter and the presentation is as arcade as you’d expect. My only issue is that if you bought the last game subtitled Fate of Two Worlds you may find it a little too similar. If, however, you don’t own that game and fancy a bit of crazy fighting action then this is definitely the game for you. It gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

“Max Payne 3 brings powerful storytelling back to the action-shooter genre,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “Rockstar Studios are delivering a game that’s both incredibly cinematic and very, very intense to play.”

It was previously thought the game would come out before Easter but we all know Rockstar aren’t ones to push a game out before it’s finished just to hit an event in the calendar.

If you’re not sure what the game’s about, here’s some blurb from the press release: “Max Payne 3 follows the famed former New York detective onto the streets of São Paulo, Brazil. Max Payne now works in executive protection for the wealthy Rodrigo Branco in the hopes of escaping the memories of his troubled past. When a street gang kidnaps Rodrigo’s wife, Max is pulled into a conspiracy of shadowy, warring factions threading every aspect of São Paulo society in a deadly web that threatens to engulf everyone and everything around him.”

Aerial combat Warhawks have been swapped with plain Hawks and these bear more than a passing resemblance to the cast of Transformers as they twist and turn from a Mech style giant robot into slick flying vehicle before blasting off into the sky. Although flight controls play identically to the original game the Hawk itself is now unable to hover and doesn’t stand up to the same battering as its predecessor. Hopefully this is something developers will fix as the Hawk factories and Hawks themselves are costly to build. It’s a long wait during the level before you get your hands on one only to be taken down by a couple of hits from a rifle. Damage meters have also vanished from vehicles leaving you to guess just how high the flames will reach before you explode.

Graphically it’s a huge step forward from the original in both detail and animations. Structures such as supply bunkers, sniper towers and laser turrets hurtle from obit in giant shipping containers and cleverly unfold like origami before your very eyes. A steampunk fad flows throughout the game with characters dressed up in cowboy gear lending a nod to the TV show FireFly. If you’re not a fan of cowboy music then hopefully custom playlists will make a return, however with music off the sound design is particularly impressive especially during building and Hawk transformations.

Damage can be dished out in many imaginative ways with trophies to match. Stomping on someone with a Hawk, dropping a building on the enemies head or smashing a vehicle by spawning a drop-pod onto it are just some of the possibilities. A low-ammo capture the flag session disaster was narrowly avoided by squishing the enemy flag carrier with an automatic gun turret as it fell from the heavens – the match was decided as the turret took down the remaining enemies intent on picking up the flag; cool indeed.

Starhawk lacks the initial bursts of action found in Warhawk, instead relying on players to wait around in their respective bases saving up energy before being able to afford weapon and vehicle supplies. From the demo it typically took around 5 minutes of collecting energy before the pace picked up to a suitable level, after 10 minutes the gameplay was over. Playing the rollercoaster predecessor Warhawk immediately afterwards highlighted just how slow and frustrating this game felt by comparison.

Longer games are available when hosting your own multiplayer game and these feel much more enjoyable until the game suddenly hits a limit of 32 buildings per team. This leads to confusing behaviour when teammates deliberately trash your hard-earned buildings just because they have their own ideas on town planning. If this is a technical restriction to prevent the PS3 from overheating then fine, but if the 32 building cap was a rule to encourage strategy then it needs to increase before frustration amongst fellow teammates kicks in.

This time round Starhawk features a single player mode featuring half man – half glowstick Emmett Graves and looks to be a glorified tower defence game as you fend off wave after wave of Outcast. The game is also due to sport one to four players in co-operative Hoarde Mode, but multiplayer is predictably where the most mileage on the game will come from. Teams working cooperatively using voice chat stand a much better chance of success than a rabble of individuals building duplicate resources as they take one step closer to hitting that annoying 32 unit cap.

Although only 2 maps were available in the Beta each round felt totally different due to fresh layout strategies of buildings. It is possible to play the same multiplayer map for months on end without ever seeing the same layout twice due to the variety of ideas and strategies from other players, and that is where the Starhawk’s biggest strength sits.

Visually the game felt polished during the closed beta however things like hovering, pacing and building limitations need to be fixed before that rumoured Starhawk release date of the May 8, 2012. If the developers Lightbox need to take a few more months to tweak the game then it’ll be worth it, Sony have a winner on their hands.

Despite being an obvious GTA rip-off, I actually quite enjoyed the first Saints Row game and the second one passed me by when I wasn’t sent it for review a couple of years ago. Thankfully THQ did send me Saints Row: The Third and the good news is it’s just as over-the-top as the TV ads make it look. This time The Saints have control over Stillwater and are attempting to take the town of Steelport away from rival factions. If you’ve played any game of this genre before you’ll know what to expect. You drive from A to B completing missions for people which usually involve shooting bad guys, chasing other cars down or blowing things up. In turn you get more money, guns and respect and this makes you even more powerful.

What’s great is the amount of customization you can apply to everything. You can be male, female, change your looks, clothes and even voice, change the way your gang members look and even pimp up your ride. Shops and property can also be bought around town to increase your influence and earn you more money as you play and as you gain respect and level up you can apply upgrades to yourself, your weapons and cars to make you even more badass!

Things don’t start off slowly either. Right from the get-go you begin by robbing a bank dressed in silly big-headed masks, have a fight on board and falling from a plane and then drop into a penthouse to take it over and make it one of your cribs. You even get into tanks and helicopters early on in the game and can take part in more side-quests which parody other videogames as and when you wish to compliment the main missions.

Voice acting is of a good standard and the lines are well written and laugh out loud funny at times which is a good thing as it certainly helps to mask some of the other flaws in the game. Enemies seem to soak up a lot of bullets unless you hit them in the head, the game glitches at times with characters getting stuck on walls and doors and the frame rate sometimes slows down noticeably during fire fights.

The soundtrack can’t be faulted though with classic and current tunes blaring out of the radio channels as you zoom round the city streets.

Add to the single player campaign the ability to also play through it in co-op mode, online competitive play and a Whored Mode which is a play on the Gears of War survival mode involving shooting a load of sex workers instead, and you have plenty to keep you amused here even if it’s all a bit rough round the edges and can get a bit repetitive once the madness has worn off a bit.

Like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie it’s mindless, silly fun which should give you hours and hours of trashy amusement so it gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

In Professor Layton’s latest adventure not only do you solve the usual assortment of puzzles but also learn how Layton met his boy assistant Luke and travel with female assistant Emmy. Once again the story also has a seemingly supernatural tone as you investigate the town of Misthallery and its unfortunate curse of a giant spectre immerging from the fog and destroying buildings. If you’ve enjoyed the previous Professor Layton games you’re sure to like this too, although you will get a strong sense of deja-vu as nothing’s really changed apart from a few more animated cut-scenes, slightly more voiced conversation scenes and more mini-games and collectibles for you to find.

Puzzles once again are a mixed bag of what you’ve seen before but are still fun to solve. They range from mazes to logic to maths puzzles, and back again are also sliding puzzles and probably the weakest ones being where you must study fine detail in pictures. The DS’s small screen doesn’t really lend itself to such puzzles and you may use up hint coins and sacrifice Picarats simple because you can’t see that well. Some puzzles are also written a little obscurely and are difficult to solve because you’re not sure exactly what you need to do. It’s also slightly annoying that all three characters have to comment on things you tap on before the speech bubbles disappear whilst you’re tapping about the screen to find hint coins, puzzles and secrets around the town and buildings.

With over 150 puzzles and some fun mini-games to play with, this one should keep you busy for many hours and it’s also fun to play along with someone else at the same time. I’m a big fan of the series but can’t help thinking they need to mix things up a little bit for the next one. It gets a brain expanding 8 out of 10.

Finally there’s news that the 3DS is actually selling out in some shops before Christmas and that probably has a lot to do with Mario coming to the system in the form of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. I’m a massive fan of the racing series so is it actually worth buying a 3DS for? Well, the short answer is, if I got the console and game for Christmas I’d be very happy indeed.

Once again you can compete in 8 cups across three speed classes, each consisting of four races. Some of these are brand new and some of these are remixed versions of old favourites thanks to some new things you can do in your kart. As well as the usual hopping, skidding and boosting, you can now fly off jumps thanks to some nifty wings and also drive underwater with a propeller. What this means in gameplay is some fun new avenues and shortcuts to try out to try and get an edge over your opponent.

Of course though, there’s the random items you can pick up and once again they can be rather annoying if you’re about to cross the finish line and you’re bombarded by blue and red shells. New to your arsenal is a Tanooki tail you can hit things with, white flower fireball power and a Lucky 7 which gives you seven power-ups at once. Surely the best of the lot! You can also customize your vehicle with different combinations of driver, chassis and wheels to tweak its performance and unlock new items by collecting coins on the track.

With balloon and coin battles thrown in there as well in both single and multiplayer, local and Wi-Fi play and Streetpass functionality this is probably the most comprehensive Mario Kart so far. The same annoyances creep in with predictable winners and harsh bad luck when trying to win in 150 cc class but overall, especially if playing with 8 other people in the same room, it’s in a handheld racing class of its own – it gets a Bowser-bashing 9 out of 10.

Despite everyone telling me how great Oblivion is I just didn’t get it. Not being a massive fan of fantasy video games the story didn’t really grip me, however I did really enjoy Fallout 3 and it was in this sci-fi setting I learned how to play a sprawling RPG that feels like you’re finding your own adventure. Skyrim is the true successor to Oblivion and because I now understand how to play this type of game I’m actually really getting into the fantasy and finding my feet.

You play the game as one of many races and classes you can choose at the beginning of the game who soon discovers he’s a Dragonborn – someone who has the ability to absorb the souls of dragons and harness their powers. Those dragons are also springing up all over the land of Skyrim so it’s a good job you’ve got the power to kill them as well and make sure they stay dead.

Throughout this massive adventure you’ll spend a lot of time wandering the lands to find new areas, talking to townsfolk to help them complete objectives and of course trading items and being given rewards for your efforts. The world is truly massive and you’ll be exploring swamps, snowy mountains, dungeons and forests, each with their own dangers and discoveries.

Combat is mostly melee unless you’re using a bow or magic and this presents its own problems. Although the game misses out on the futuristic V.A.T.S. system of Fallout 3, at least it does a better job of combat even though it can still feel a bit like you’re just swinging your sword or club around wildly. You can equip all sorts of armour, rings and robes to give you extra powers and also enchant weapons with extra magical abilities such as dealing out poison, fire or ice damage.

It’s good to see they’ve also updated the graphics somewhat. The environments are absolutely gorgeous, especially during dusk or dawn – it’s a pity characters still move a bit wooden still and facial textures are a bit of a mixed bag as well but to be honest, you’ll be so wrapped up in your quests these are minor things that won’t bother you at all once you’re up to speed with everything. The dragons themselves are also immense and feel really powerful when you encounter them.

I’ve been playing the game for hours and still probably haven’t even scratched the surface. Be warned though ,there are plenty of bugs being spotted by gamers every day including instances of NPCs not activating the next part of your quest, dragons flying backwards and falling through the floor of the world. Bethesda do assure us though that they will keep patching until it’s perfect. However, if you’re looking for a game to get lost in this Christmas instead of talking to your relatives then this could be the one for you. It gets a dragon-slaying 9 out of 10.

Here are my top 5 games coming up in 2012:

BioShock Infinite

At number five it’s BioShock Infinite. This time the action’s not sent in the underwater world of Rapture but instead on a giant city in the air called Columbia in 1912. You play as a guy called Booker DeWitt who’s not a French comedian but in fact a disgraced former agent acting as a lone wolf. The gameplay is the familiar mix of first-person shooting and role playing you’ve come to expect with the BioShock games and of course you’ll get some cool abilities to raise the stakes alongside the usual array of weaponry that fires bullets. This Bioshock game has been in development for over two and a half years now so hopefully this one will be the best of the lot.

Hitman: Absolution

At number four it’s Hitman: Absolution. We haven’t seen Agent 47 in a game for a long time now, the last time was in that movie which it’s best we all forget about. This is the first time you’ll be able to dress up and kill people on HD consoles and although not much has been given away in terms of plot, this gameplay trailer doing the rounds online shows off just how gorgeous it looks and that you can do familiar things such as garrotte people from behind, disguise yourself as policemen and the like in order to find your target or remain anonymous and a new ability where Agent 47 can see through walls. We may have seen some of these gameplay mechanics since the last Hitman game in games such as Batman and Assassin’s Creed but combined with the cold killing mentality of this slaphead assassin we could have a very special formula.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising

At three it’s Metal Gear Solid: Rising. I have a love/hate relationship with the Metal Gear games because despite the wonky control method and massively over-indulgent cut scenes I do find them rather enjoyable. None of us really liked playing as Raiden in MGS2 but Metal Gear Solid 4 showed us that somehow he’d become a cyborg ninja badass! Quite how that happened to him we don’t know but in this game we’ll get to find out because it follows the events before he pops up in MGS 4, slices everyone up and then promptly appears to die in front of you. The game also apparently features sophisticated swordplay and for the first time Metal Gear Solid hits the Xbox 360 as well as Sony’s machine. Take that Link!

The Last Guardian

At number two it’s The Last Guardian. Having just played through the HD re-masters of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus I’m just aching for more Team Ico action which is bound to be engaging, beautiful and emotional all at the same time. Once again it seems the action follows a young boy who’s trying to escape from the boundaries of a large castle but this time he has the help of a large eagle-type-dog creature called Trico. It won’t be easy though as Trico has his own animal instincts and it’s up to you to appeal those instincts in order to progress. The game was supposed to come out in 2011 but hopefully it will eventually hit the stores at the beginning of next year.

Mass Effect 3

And at number one it’s Mass Effect 3. Electronic Arts are keen to point out that anyone can jump in and play this third game in the outstanding sci-fi RPG series and understand what’s going on. The game will be more action focussed this time around as The Reapers launch a full scale attack on planet Earth and Commander Shepard and his crew from the Normandy fight back with the result being a lot of fancy explosions! This time around there’s also a multiplayer mode called Galaxy at War where you can go on co-op missions to help the cause. The Mass Effect universe is as rich as any other popular sci-fi offering and I for one can’t wait to dive right back into it for the Mass Effect 3 release date of March 2012.

I’ve never been a fan of the 3D Rayman games. Although the armless hero does appeal to some, for me he’s always been Ubisoft’s attempt at making its own version of Mario or Sonic with only some degree of success. Rayman Origins has changed my opinion because not only is it a slick 2D platformer, it’s also one of the most gorgeous looking and sounding games on HD consoles. So what’s the story about? Well, to be honest, it’s hard to tell thanks to there being no speech during the opening sequence but it’s something to do with four kings needing to be rescued, some fairies that need to be freed and Rayman waking up the whole forest with his snoring. Regardless of what’s going on, you soon set off on your journey and run and bounce through the levels collecting yellow Lums, pink Electoons and then revisiting those levels to do time trials and earn yet more Electoons.

You can play as Rayman, Globox or any of the kings and although they look different, they all have the same powers which get unlocked as you progress through the game. To begin with you can only run and jump but as you go you get the ability to run up walls, hover, turn small and also hit things. You can also play the game with up to three friends in drop in drop out mode which adds to the fun or confusion depending on your point of view. As you can see it all looks fantastic and the music is a mix of tribal beats, jazz and other funky grooves which gets added to with new notes as you collect stuff. Each area is also finished off with a shoot ‘em up section which, although simple, does a better job than some other recent attempts in games such as Shadows of the Damned and Alice Madness Returns.

If you wish you can just race through the levels but you will have to return to find hidden areas and to collect everything to give you full marks and all the items you’ll need to progress which of course adds to the amount of time you’ll spend on the game. It’s fair to say that this is one of the most fun, slick platform games out on consoles at the moment and shouldn’t be discounted just because you think Rayman himself is a little bit naff. It gets an almost perfect 9 out of 10.

Goldeneye 007: Reloaded is an HD remake of the Wii re-imagining of the original Goldeneye on the N64. Still with me? Good. If you’re not aware of what’s going on with it, basically it brings the Goldeneye story into the modern era with Daniel Craig instead of Pierce Brosnan and different level design that pays homage to the movies but shouldn’t actually be considered as an HD version of the N64 game because it’s not. Whilst it’s not what I would call a premium FPS it still delivers some fun action moments although to be honest, the whole package is a little underwhelming.

To start with, the HD graphics don’t improve things much from the Wii version. Whilst they look less muddy and run smoothly at 60 fps, the textures are pretty basic apart from in a couple of areas, those being the snowy mountains of Severnaya and the jungle levels near the end of the game. Facial textures are also a mixed bag – weirdly the best ones you’ll find are on the faces of the bouncers in the nightclub which incidentally plays Deadmau5 which in my opinion gives it bonus points!

Gameplay is also rudimentary. Whilst I much prefer a joypad to the Wii’s remote and nunchuck controls it is possible to mostly run and gun through entire levels thanks to an overly-aggressive auto aim and dumb enemy AI. If you want a challenge my advice is to play the game on at least 007 difficulty and turn the snap-to auto-aim off. If you like to take things slowly and replay levels there are also emblems to find and shoot and objectives to complete such as scanning data with your smartphone.

Other annoyances include not being able to jump and only being able to mantle some areas and not others. Invisible walls are not a gamer’s friend! There’s also an out-of-place tank section in the game which is very tricky to control.

Weirdly the single player campaign actually feels like I’m playing Nightfire on the PS2 or similar but things have moved on since then. With game such as Call of Duty and Battlefield taking centre stage, there’s just no way James Bond can compete in either single player or multiplayer – speaking of which there is of course local four-player split screen and plenty of game modes to choose from but most people will play online and in my experience the frame rate is lacking and the textures even worse in this mode – if you can actually find anyone playing!

And if you’re into extra challenges there are also MI6 missions to try out with objectives such as protecting servers or killing everyone in the shortest time possible. They do provide extra gameplay but also serve to highlight just how strange the AI can be when you’re trying to sneak about and get spotted through a wall.

If you’re a James Bond fan you will get something out of this but if you’re after a more realistic experience where, for example, you can’t shoot someone from a distance with your pistol then you won’t find it here. Goldeneye 007: Reloaded gets 6 out of 10.

We decided to get straight onto the rows of Nintendo 3DSs lined up, have a practice and set our times – myself starting at 2m5s on a course and managing to whittle it down to 1m58s. Thinking it was rather good I posted my time and chatted to other gaming dignitaries who rocked up as well as spotting a few famous faces including comedians Rufus Hound and Dom Joly and some other randoms I’ve never heard of who I’m assured were on Signed by Katie Price. I also grooved along to some cool tunes provided by Nintendisco. 90s beats mixed with video game sound effects is in fact rather fun to listen to. Unfortunately my great time trial time turned out to be not so great as most people said they got a faster time than me. Witchcraft I tell you!

And so the semi-finals began where groups of 8 all entered the same race via local ad-hoc connection and battled it out for first and second place. My name wasn’t called and so I prepared to leave – and just then, I WAS called to the stage and compete on one of the shell cup courses for a place in the grand final. To cut a long story short I missed my boost start, fell off a cliff and limped in at 6th place. Tired and with my tail between my legs I left the event and joined the protestors outside. They were protesting about pensions, I was protesting about my poor random weapon selection. Mario Kart 7 is out tomorrow for the 3DS – better get more practice in…

The introduction of the new slimline PS3 which is smaller, quieter and more power efficient has really turned heads in the last year or so. Don’t forget that the system isn’t just a top notch gaming console, it’s also able to play high definition Blu-Ray discs. That’s right – the best way to watch movies in HD right out of the box. For those that already have a 3D enabled TV and glasses, guess what? The PS3 is ready to play 3D games and movies right away, awesome!

In addition to that, the PlayStation 3 is also a great way to get media over the internet. Not only can you use it to stream movies and tv shows from Netflix, but the built in access to PlayStation Network (PSN) gives you access to a huge wealth of movies to buy or rent at the push of a button. Motion Control is available on the system and many thing it’s actually the best because it’s a hyrbid of the systems used by Nintendo and Microsoft. Just like the Wii, PlayStation Move is a hand based motion controller that turns your movements into onscreen controls. Unlike Wii, a camera tracks your movements and allows for better tracking as well as a chance to get your own ugly/pretty face into the game.

Why buy a separate BluRay player and games console when you can have both in the same sleek unit? There’s just not good reason why you haven’t got a PlayStation 3 already so just take a look at these deals from Amazon and rectify the situation right away; otherwise you’ll be watching re-runs on PBS again this Christmas.

Microsoft Xbox 360 is no doubt the gaming system of choice for gamers that want high quality games, dedicated online services and some of the best games money can buy. Xbox Live is the number one gaming community service and to get the most out of it you’ll need to buy a yearly Gold Subscription that costs around $50. This may seem expensive but it really is worth it; not only will you get the best multiplayer gaming experience but open a whole host of features such as:

Xbox 360 isn’t just about the hardcore gamer; with the introduction of the Kinect, Microsoft have brought family fun that was previously only associated with Nintendo Wii into the fold. The Kinect is a device (usually sold separately) which allows for motion controlled games, simply move your body infront of the camera and watch as your onscreen character follows your movements. Kinect is also a new way to control your home cinema, with voice and motion control provided by Kinect – you can watch movies and listen to movies simply be speaking to your system and using hand gestures.

You may have heard that the Xbox 360 was unreliable and often broke down. This used to be true before Microsoft went back to the drawing board and redesigned the console inside and out. The new slimline console is smaller, quieter, power efficient and does not suffer from any of the overheating issues which plagued the console in in 2006 to 2009 – if you buy an Xbox 360 for Holiday 2011 then you can rely on it for years to come.

Xbox 360 packages start at around $200 so there really is no excuse. The system comes only comes with a standard definition cable so I suggest picking up an Xbox 360 HDMI Cable if you own a new HD television.

You can probably guess what the story is but in case you don’t know, Mario is rather keen on Princess Peach and once again the evil Bowser steals her away and locks here away in his castle. It’s up to you to make your way across the treacherous Mario Land in order to get her back. You’d think by now she’d have a restraining order on the moody lizard fella!

Initially there are eight worlds for you to run and jump around and each of these are split into five levels along with special areas and gift boxes you can run into in order to collect power ups and coins. New powers include the Mario Tanooki suit which looks like a raccoon where Mario can jump and hover as he falls back to earth by kicking his legs. He can also get access to a boomerang in order to take out foes, hid in a cardboard box with a propeller attached to it so he can spin to higher places and of course get flower power and throw fireballs at his enemies. The touch screen is used to activate one stored power-up and this time, if you collect a new one, it swaps automatically with the stored item so you can swap it back at a later date. There’s also a handy box that appears after you die a few times on a level which gives you invulnerable Tanooki powers which is definitely a better option than having the game play through the level on your behalf. You’ll still die if you fall out of the screen!

I have to be honest and say that usually I can’t get on with the 3D mode of the 3DS. Most games I play with the 3D switched off as I find it a distraction. However, for the first time the 3D is actually very good in Super Mario 3D Land and doesn’t send my eyes all wonky. With a touch of the d-pad you can even change the depth of the 3D even further to cater for how you wish to see things. There are also some gift boxes which make use of the 3D to show you where platforms actually are in 3D space where, if you look in just 3D, you actually see an optical illusion where things aren’t all what they seem!

My only gripe is that the game is actually a little too easy. This is the first time I’ve managed to collect all the large coins in the game without too much difficulty and you begin each stage as big Mario – even going through a checkpoint automatically makes you big again. Things do get a little tougher though once you enter the ‘special’ levels and this doubles the initial playthrough time and is a welcome addition where you can play as Luigi.

Super Mario 3D Land is a no-brainer for the 3DS. If you like games your games to be perfectly balanced and provide lots of short, sharp entertainment on the move then this is the game for you. It gets an almost perfect 9 out of 10.
