Tetsunoko vs Capcom is the latest in the vs series of 2D fighting games from Capcom which pits the most beloved of their characters against another brand. We’ve already seen this work very well with vs SNK and Marvel and now it’s time for the famous anime company Tetsunoko to have a go at kicking some ass.

If you’re not Japanese you’ll be forgiven for not knowing many of the characters getting in the ring with the Capcom characters but you may have heard of Jun the Swan and Ken the Eagle from what we know in the UK as Battle of the Planets. Famous Capcom fighters include Ryu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, Viewtiful Joe, MegaMan and even one of the mechs from Lost Planet. Anyway, it’s safe to say that all the fighters you can choose in this game are very colourful and have some over-the-top special moves and you can pull them off with varying degrees of difficulty depending on how you wish to play.

If you’re well-versed in these types of games you’ll want to play with a classic controller or GameCube controller. You can also play a simpler level of gameplay with the Remote and Nunchuck and even easier controls using the Remote on its own. Using just the remote it’s very simple to pull off super moves and combos using both players on your tag team at the touch of a button and a direction press on the D-pad.

There are also plenty of game modes including arcade, time attack, survival and even an online Wi-Fi mode so you can play against others all around the world.

Wii owners may be annoyed that they didn’t get Street Fighter IV but this 2D fighter really is a fantastic substitute and is a lot less serious than its HD counterpart. Even the intro movie is as Japanese and cheesy as you like and bound to put a smile on your face.

If you want a 2D fighting game with plenty of options and characters and one which anyone can play from button bashers to fighting masters, this one’s a must-have on the Wii. Tetsunoko vs. Capcom gets a kick-ass 9 out of 10.
