What is it about video gamers?  We’re never content with what we have, and instead of finishing all the games we own, we constantly look ahead to what new games are coming out in the months ahead. So here’s a little look at our most anticipated video games of 2011 for each major gaming format.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword

First up for Nintendo Wii comes The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword. Obviously it hasn’t gone unnoticed that Nintendo, and third party developers, have concentrated too heavily on casual games since Wii’s launch. With around three years in development, Skyward Sword for Wii is promising to be the best 3D Zelda game ever. Graphically it is pushing the Wii to its absolute limits, and with the aid of MotionPlus we will take control of Link and his trusty sword in a totally new way. This is likely to be the last truly huge core game from Nintendo’s internal development studios until Wii2 is unveiled. We just know it is going to be a smash hit when Zelda for Wii releases around January 2011.

Portal 2

Next is our pick for PC and Mac Owners - Portal 2. Anyone with sense agrees that Portal was the game of the year in 2006. Blending a first person shooter with puzzle solving in four-dimensional space sounds like a crazy idea, but Valve pulled it off. Not only did they manage to shock gamers with the whole Portal Gun dynamic, but they also introduced a unique storytelling narrative. We are really looking forward to a new single player campaign, as well the totally fresh 2 player online coop storyline - but we can’t wait to see what other surprises Valve have got in store for us when Portal 2 releases February 2011.

Pokémon Black and White

Things have been a tad dry for Nintendo DS owners recently. Since the reveal of the Nintendo 3DS (release date due March 2011), it’s pretty obvious where Nintendo have been pushing the development dollars. Other developers could have seized this opportunity to release great DS games, but for the most part they’ve not really done so. Luckily Nintendo have one final ace up their sleeve in the shape of Pokémon Black and White for DS. Until now, almost every portable Pokémon game for Gameboy or Nintendo DS has pretty much been a remake of the original. What’s more astonishing is how many people keep buying the same damn game. Well, this time Nintendo are not being lazy! They are developing a totally new Pokémon title for DS, which by the looks of it will blow everyone’s heads off when they play it. We’d have been happy with just a different story - but the whole new graphic engine and array of fresh Pokémon might make this one of the biggest selling games ever. We’ll just have to wait and see when Pokémon Black and White for DS releases in Spring 2011.

Gears of War 3

Microsoft Xbox 360 owners tend to shout from the rooftops about their exclusive games - Halo, and Gears of War. Now I’m going to cause a bit of a stir here by admitting that neither franchise has ever hit my G-Spot. Halo felt boring, and any shooter based on the Unreal 3 engine just plays like pants. However, I’m hoping that Gears of War 3 for Xbox 360 is going to change all that. It’s supposedly running on a totally new interpretation of the Unreal software - and best of all, four player online cooperative player via Xbox live.  With plenty of new weapons and thousands of new Locust to shoot, perhaps GOW3 will finally get me hooked. Fingers crossed, the Gears of War 3 release date is around April 2011.

Killzone 3

Last, but not least, is our pick for Sony PlayStation 3. Despite a horrid start to the console battle, Sony are really starting to make headway and look very competitive in the hard-core gaming scene. Upon its release, Killzone 2 was gloried up to be the ultimate FPS. Okay, so it really was just another generic shooter with tough macho heavies - but you can’t deny that it really showed off what the PS3 could do in the right hands. If Killzone 3 can deliver even better graphics and pop-out visuals for those with 3D enabled TV’s, then this could very well be the PS3 shooter that Sony needs to steal some gamers away from Xbox 360 next year. Killzone 3 for PS3 releases February 2011.
